Columbia Power Technologies LLC (Columbia Power), equipped with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has embarked on a research and development (R&D) initiative to develop, optimize, demonstrate and validate an intermediate-scale version of its Manta Wave Energy Converter device. Columbia Power consortium partner, GL Garrad Hassan, has been tasked to review and analyze wave data at the scaled site, optimize the wave energy converter, detail control algorithms, and to provide real seas control strategies and training.
“We have reached a key milestone in this project,” said Ken Rhinefrank, VP of R&D at Columbia Power. “DOE’s funding, in addition to the support from the Oregon Congressional Delegation, has enabled us to move forward with sea trials in an efficient manner. We are confident that it will help us to realize a cost-effective wave energy solution with our Manta design in the near future.”
Columbia Power President Brad Lamb added, “Experience has proven that working with a consortium of experts is the smartest way to operate in an R&D environment. Capital efficiency and speed are essential and collaboration with GL Garrad Hassan’s Marine Renewables Group has been vital in the project thus far. We look forward to their continued support.”
Deployment for the Manta Wave Energy Converter is projected to be at a sheltered site in the Puget Sound area in late 2010, in advance of a full-scale ocean demonstration. Columbia Power and the consortium have been working in unison on the wave converter device since 2008. 33rd and 15th scale models have been developed and successfully tested at Oregon State University in both the Tsunami Wave Basin and the Long Wave Flume.
Joao Cruz, Head of Wave Energy at GL Garrad Hassan said, “We have been working with Columbia Power for more than two years, and I feel privileged to have witnessed the development of this flagship device, via a step-by-step approach that follows industry guidelines. We are delighted to provide support for the Manta Wave Converter and its future development.”
GL Garrad Hassan provided services to the earlier phases of this project that included review and development of the technology road map, numerical modelling of the wave energy converter response, tank testing guidelines and on-site support during tank trials, and verification and validation of numerical model predictions and design optimization.
